Volunteer Opportunities
Stepping Stones Preschool policy encourages all families to volunteer for the school for 2.5 hours each quarter. Stepping Stones is sensitive to the challenges of working parent families, and realizes that volunteering during school hours is not possible for everyone. The list below include several after hours options.
Potlucks
Sign-up to set-up, serve or cleanup OR contribute to the menu OR just show up and informally lend a hand. There is always somebody who needs more grapes, a little juice to mop up here and there, etc. At each potluck there are typically at least a few menu options that can be prepared the night before and dropped off at school in the morning.
Volunteer in the Classroom
An extra helping hand is always appreciated, even on a plain old average day at school. If you have a little time, just schedule a time with Ms Naomi - nearly any time is fine.
Share a Special Skill or Heritage
Got a career, hobby, skill or heritage that translates to pre-school? Stepping Stones would be thrilled to have you come in and share it with the kids. Play a musical instrument? Come give a demonstration. Are there non-American traditions or culture that is special to your family? Come tell the kids about it.
Provide a Morning Snack
Like to cook or bake? Prepare a morning snack for the children and bring it to school (note - may be dropped off early in the morning). Please schedule in advance with Ms. Naomi and give her a heads up on your planned menu. Licensing has a few nutritional guidelines that must be followed, and she can give you the heads up on that, as well as advising on quantities. All snacks must includes a fruit or vegetable and a grain (bread, rice, cracker, etc.) NO NUTS
Take Home Toys to Wash
Ever wonder what happens to the "toy pizza" that really gets "eaten"? Somebody gets to wash it! Give Ms. Naomi a head's up in advance and she will prepare a bag of washable toys for you to take home on a Friday afternoon. Return to school on Monday.
Lead a Cooking Project
Got an idea for a cooking project that works for little fingers? Interesting ethnic foods and/or foods that follow the "theme of the week" are encouraged, but most likely any fun idea will do. Plan this ahead of time with Ms. Naomi.
Attend a Community Meeting
Attend a quarterly Community Meeting and share your thoughts on our school.
Help Fix Something
Capable of handling small home improvement projects? There is almost certainly something around school that could use the attention of a hammer, screwdriver or paintbrush. Ask Ms. Naomi for specific ideas.
Chaperone a Field Trip
Volunteer to chaperone a field trip.
School Marketing
Help out with designing brochures, business cards or expanding the website.
Options for Tight Schedules
Got a tight schedule that just doesn't let up during the day? Here are some suggestions for after-hours help.
- Prepare food for a potluck, drop off in the morning.
- Prepare a morning snack, drop it off in the morning.
- Take home toys to clean. Pick up Friday. Drop off Monday.
Or - lucky enough to have an involved, local grandparent? They are most welcome to come in as a family representative.
Beyond Field Trips
Here's a few examples of interesting ways that parents have helped out at school.
Charlie's Dad assembled the water play sinks.
Shoichiro's Mom led a sushi-making cooking project.
Isa's Grandmother (a retired music teacher) will be stopping by the school to give the children demonstrations on various instruments.
Parker's Mom designed the cover for the new Stepping Stones brochure.
